Remembering Richard Voorhees’s Legacy of Service to Montvale

Richard Randall Voorhees

July 8, 1930 – August 3, 2026

Richard Randall Voorhees and his family moved to Montvale in 1972, beginning what would become more than five decades of dedicated involvement in the community. With an early interest in local government, Richard joined a local political club and, a few years later, was encouraged to seek elected office.

Richard was appointed to fill a Council vacancy in 1984. He was elected to a three-year term in 1985 and went on to serve six additional terms, completing 22 years of service on the Montvale Borough Council. His commitment to the community extended well beyond his elected position.

Beginning in 1977, Richard served 12 years on the Montvale Planning Board, contributing to the thoughtful development and planning of the Borough both before and during his tenure on the Council.

Richard was also a charter member of the Montvale Access Group, established in 1991 to develop television programming of local interest for Montvale residents. He remained active with the organization for many years, helping expand opportunities for residents to stay informed and connected to their community.

In 1994, Richard began a long tenure on the Montvale Library Board of Trustees, serving as the Mayor’s Alternate. Representing Mayors David Metlitz, George Zeller, and Michael Ghassali, he served for 26 years in that role.  Richard played an instrumental role in planning and spearheading several events celebrating Montvale’s Centennial, helping mark an important milestone in the Borough’s history.

Perhaps one of Richard’s most lasting contributions has been his work to preserve Montvale’s historic character. In 1997, concerned that the historic Octagon House might be demolished after the property was put up for sale, Richard initiated the formation of the Montvale Historic Preservation Commission. Through that effort, the Octagon House—and eventually eight other historic properties—were designated as Historic Landmarks and afforded protection from demolition without Borough approval. Richard remained a member of the Commission until only a year ago, serving as Chairman for many years.

Across more than five decades, Richard’s service has touched nearly every aspect of community life—from government and planning to the library, local media, civic celebrations, and historic preservation. His record reflects not simply years of service, but a sustained commitment to making Montvale a better place for its residents and preserving the qualities that make the Borough special.

Richard leaves behind a remarkable legacy of civic involvement. Montvale has been a wonderful place for him and his family to live and raise a family. He hoped the organizations he has served will continue to thrive and that Montvale will remain in good hands through the dedication of its elected officials, volunteers, and residents.

Richard’s contribution to Montvale is measured not only in the 22 years he spent on the Borough Council or the many boards and commissions on which he served, but in the enduring institutions, preserved landmarks, and stronger community he helped to build.
