Curbside yard waste collection takes place every Friday from April through mid‑October.

Branches, Brush & Twigs

• Must be bundled and tied or placed in containers
• Cut to 4 feet in length
• Maximum 4 inches in diameter

Grass Clippings

• Collected Fridays, April–mid‑October
• Place clippings in a reusable container

Logs & Stumps

• Not accepted at the Recycling Center
• Residents must arrange private disposal at their own expense

Curbside leaf collection in paper leaf bags occurs Fridays from mid‑October through mid/late December.

Important:

• Leaf collection does NOT include branches, brush, or twigs
• These items may be brought to the Recycling Center on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, 8:00 AM–3:00 PM
• Local ordinances prohibit placing loose leaf piles at the curb

Bulk items are collected by appointment only.

Metal Appliances

Accepted by appointment:

• Refrigerators & freezers
• Air conditioners
• Washers & dryers
• Grills
• Hot water heaters

Other Bulky Items

Examples include:

• Rugs (must be cut into 3‑foot strips, tied, and under 40 lbs per bundle)
• Mattresses & box springs
• Sofas, chairs, and similar items

Residents are asked to limit pickups to 3–4 bulky items.

Electronics

Not collected curbside. Bring to the Montvale Recycling Center:

• TVs, stereos, computers, laptops
• Cell phones, printers, fax machines
• DVD players, VCRs, iPads, iPods

Construction debris is not covered under the municipal waste contract.
Westphal Waste Services does not collect it.

• Contractors must remove all debris as part of the project
• DIY residents must arrange private disposal

The Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) manages hazardous waste disposal for all county residents.

The Montvale Recycling Center cannot accept hazardous waste.

Potholes form when water enters cracks in the pavement and expands during freeze/thaw cycles or when heavy vehicles weaken the roadway. Once a weak spot forms, traffic quickly worsens the damage.

To report a pothole, please complete the online DPW Road Maintenance Form.

• The Department of Public Works handles all municipal roads
• Potholes on county roads are forwarded to the Bergen County Road Department

Snow Plowing & Driveway Tips

Each winter, many residents experience the frustration of clearing their driveways only to have snow pushed back in by the plows. While this cannot be completely avoided, a few simple steps can help reduce the problem and make snow removal safer and more efficient for everyone.

Before the Storm

• Plan ahead the day or night before snowfall.

• Move all vehicles off the street before plowing begins.

  Park so the first vehicle you need is the last one in the driveway—this reduces the amount of snow you’ll need to clear to get out.

Shoveling Tips

• Pile snow behind the curb, not in the roadway.

  Snow placed in front of the curb will be pushed back by plows.

• If you hire a contractor, ask them to follow these guidelines.

• Take it slow. Snow shoveling is strenuous, and plows may pass again, adding snow to the end of your driveway. Working together and planning ahead helps the entire community.

Snow Plow Markers

To help prevent curb and lawn damage during plowing:

• Markers may be placed along the curbline.

• Acceptable materials: wood, metal, or plastic

• Recommended height: 36–48 inches
